Chapter 1: Prologue – The Battle for the Lakes

The morning mist hung low over the waters of Lake Erie, thick as wool, muffling the creak of oars and the distant boom of cannon fire. Lieutenant James Monroe stood stiff at the prow of the battered gunboat, the cold biting through his worn coat. His eyes scanned the gray horizon, searching for any sign of movement beyond the shrouded shoreline.

“Lieutenant, the men are anxious,” said Captain Samuel Winslow, his voice barely above a whisper. His face was streaked with grime, and his hands trembled slightly as he clutched the rail. “We’ve been chasing shadows for hours.”

Monroe didn’t answer. The weight of command pressed down on him heavier than the damp cold. Detroit had fallen weeks ago, and now this—this watery no-man’s-land where British ships lurked like ghosts. The war had dragged longer than anyone had expected. Every victory was paid for in blood.

“Sir,” called a lookout from the mast, “smoke on the horizon—three sails, coming fast from Kingston.”

The two officers exchanged a glance. “Ready the guns,” Winslow ordered. “We hold this line, or it’s all lost.”

On the British side, Captain Joseph Lefebvre stood on the deck of the HMS Resolute, gripping the wheel with white-knuckled fingers. The fog clung to the rigging, and the cold seeped into his bones. He was a Quebecois by birth, loyal to the Crown only because it was the only path he’d ever known.

“Steady, men,” he murmured in French, his voice rough with exhaustion. “The Americans think they can push us back. We’ll show them the strength of this land.”

His second-in-command, Lieutenant Angus MacDonald, a fiery Scot with a scar across his cheek, leaned in. “Captain, the men are restless. They speak of surrender, of joining the Americans.”

Lefebvre’s eyes narrowed. “Surrender? Never. But ... perhaps it is time to ask ourselves what we fight for. Is it for a distant king who sends us to die in these endless woods? Or is it for the people here—our neighbors, our families?”
