Chapter 12: Cracks in the Facade
In the days that followed, Havana’s unease deepened into dread. Spanish authorities began sweeping arrests—anyone suspected of aiding the rebels or consorting with Americans was targeted. Lucía’s father became withdrawn, haunted by the growing danger to his family and their dwindling influence. Even Captain Ruiz, once their protector, now eyed them with suspicion.
Michael’s articles about the camps, smuggled out by Eleanor, were picked up by American newspapers and created a public outcry. Yet his own editors pressed for more—more scandal, more certainty, more blame. Michael resisted the urge to use the forged orders, but the pressure from his handler and his conscience threatened to break him.
At a tense dinner at the Alvarez home, Ruiz announced that the Spanish government had intercepted coded rebel messages. “Some believe the Americans are manipulating the rebels for their own ends,” he said pointedly, his gaze flicking to Michael. “And that some Cubans are too trusting of foreign promises.”
