Chapter 15: Siege and Sacrifice
The final siege began. American troops poured onto the island, the Spanish retreated, and Havana became a city under martial law. The rebels—led by Rafael—rose in open revolt, seizing key positions with Michael’s help. The fighting was brutal and confused, with civilians caught in the crossfire and rumors of American troops looting and mistreating both Spanish and Cuban families.
Michael and Rafael orchestrated a daring raid on a Spanish munitions depot—one that turned the tide of battle, but at terrible cost. Rafael was gravely wounded, and Michael barely escaped with his life. News of the Spanish surrender reached the city as the smoke still lingered over the rooftops.
