Chapter 17: Crossroads at Dawn
The city rebuilt in fits and starts. American soldiers patrolled the streets, and the Platt Amendment was read aloud in the plazas—Cuba, “free,” but never truly sovereign. Lucía’s brother Rafael, wounded but alive, left for the countryside to help rebuild the nation. Her father died quietly, a casualty not of battle but of heartbreak.
Lucía survived, but the ache of Michael’s absence was a constant shadow. She received a letter from him months later, sent from New York: a confession of his love, his failures, his hope that one day she might forgive him and find happiness, with or without him.
