Decades later, their grandchildren would walk the halls of universities in America and Europe, bearing names that blended two worlds—Spanish and English, Cuban and American. One would become a senator, championing the rights of immigrants. Another, a doctor, would return to Cuba to open clinics in the very barrios where her grandmother once taught. A great-grandson would become a journalist, like Michael, reporting from war zones and refusing to print lies, no matter the cost.
