Chapter 7: Sting

Ed and Ellen were in their suite, still in the afterglow of their dinner.

Then, Conner floated through the ceiling and stopped where Ed would see him.

“Hello Conner. Do you have something to report?” asked Ed.

Ellen tried to see where Ed was looking, but she saw nothing.

“Yes, the boat has returned.”

“I’ll call my CIA contact. You’d better go back and observe.”

“Okay,” Conner then left.

Ed picked up his phone and called his CIA contact.

“Hello, US Public Affairs, how may I direct your call?”

“My name is Ed Tanner, Code in is Diamond 9 4 0,” said Ed.

After a pause, someone said, “Please hold.”

“Hello, this is Lucas Brooks.”

“This is Ed Tanner. It’s go time. A boat just arrived in the cove.”

“Understood. ETA is about forty minutes.”

“Okay.”

The call ended. Ed turned to Ellen. “It’s on. I’m nowhere near the action.”

“That’s as it should be. We can watch a movie while we wait.” Ellen used a remote to reveal a large screen TV. They selected a romantic comedy and settled in to enjoy it.

Conner zoomed upwards into the sky and adjusted his course to the smugglers’ cove. Ghosts can move quite fast, so it wasn’t long before he returned.

The smugglers’ boat was already tied to the dock, and the smugglers were unloading cargo. But Jane was nowhere to be seen.

Then Conner saw it. The ghost pirate ship was arriving under full sail, headed for the smugglers’ boat.

At the last moment, the ghost pirate ship turned to port and fired its starboard cannons. The ghostly cannonballs flew through the smugglers’ boat before disappearing.

Of course, the smugglers couldn’t see the attacking ghost pirate ship. So, once the cargo was ashore, they prepared to cast off.

“Oh no, the boat will leave before the task force arrives!” said Conner.

The barrage of ghostly cannonballs continued, and Conner noticed they were targeting where the engine room would be.

“Why aren’t they leaving?” thought Conner.

Minutes passed. Conner could see two coastguard cutters in the distance. They were arriving.

The smugglers aboard the boat were yelling to those on the shore. Something was going on. They still hadn’t left. Conner watched the scene unfold as the smugglers got more agitated. By now, they’d seen the coastguard cutters.

“They can’t start their engines!” said Conner. He’d figured it out. “Those cannonballs likely disrupted the boat’s electrical system.”

Conner watched as the two coastguard cutters boxed in the cove and the helpless smugglers’ boat.

The ghost pirate ship sailed out of the cove and left. Jane rose from the ghost pirate ship and flew over to Conner.

“That was fun! They let me fire their cannons,” said Jane.

“That was you??”

“Oh yes. I told the pirates this was my revenge. They were all for helping me. I told them to leave the coastguard alone.”

The coastguard sent motor launches to the shore, loaded with armed men. They soon rounded up everyone in the area or on the boat.

“Jane, I think your cannonballs fried the electrical system on the boat. They can’t start their engines,” said Conner.

“The pirates didn’t understand why it didn’t have any sails. I realized the engine room was below deck, towards the rear.”

Conner and Jane watched as the armed coastguard ferried the captured smugglers to their vessels. They also saw red and blue lights further inland.

“I think the operation is a success,” said Conner.

“Yeah! I feel I got my revenge. Woohoo!”

It was some time later when Conner and Jane returned to Ed and Ellen.

The honeymooning couple were watching a movie in their suite.

“Ellen, we’ve got company,” said Ed.

Ellen pressed pause on the remote. “Okay, go ahead.”

“Ed, the coastguard cutters arrived in time and caught the smugglers. The smugglers still had their boat tied to the dock, and their engines wouldn’t start,” said Conner.

“We’ve the ghost pirate ship to thank for that,” said Jane.

“That’s excellent news. I should check in with my CIA contact,” said Ed.

Ed fetched his phone and dialed. He put it on speaker so everyone could hear.

“Hello, US Public Affairs, how may I direct your call?”

“My name is Ed Tanner, Code in is Diamond 9 4 0,” said Ed.

After a brief pause, someone said, “Just a moment.”

“Hello, this is Lucas Brooks.”

“It’s Ed here.”

“Please activate your scrambler. You forgot last time.”

“Okay, I’m scrambled. I just heard the coastguard cutters apprehended the smugglers.”

“That’s good news. A win for the task force. You’ve earned me some goodwill with the locals here.”

“You’re welcome. I did this for someone else. I’m glad to see them removed from the island. Just remember I was never here. You received an anonymous tip or something similar,” said Ed.

“We always guard our sources. I’m thoroughly impressed. Noah Johnson said you were special. Please call if you have more in the future.”

“I will, I promise. I’m trying to keep out of trouble; this is supposed to be our holiday.”

“If you visit Antigua, you’re welcome to stop by and say hello.”

“I’ll keep that in mind. I have to make another call now. Goodnight!”

Ed ended the call.

“You earned some goodwill with Lucas,” said Conner.

“I must check in with the Kalinago.” Ed dialed the number for his Kalinago contact, again on speaker.

“Hello, this is Ed.”

“Hello, boyez Ed. We’ve been watching events unfold. We had to retreat when the police arrived.”

“Good. I was going to suggest that. I want to avoid any trouble for the Kalinago.”

“Thank you for calling. We’ve accounted for everyone. We photographed some smugglers. The photos will soon reach the authorities. This benefitted Dominica and the Kalinago. Can we expect your visit to our village tomorrow, perhaps?”

Ed looked at Ellen, who nodded.

“I just checked with Ellen, and she agrees. Is around noon okay?”

“Yes, that works. We’ll see you then.”

Ed ended the call. He turned back to Conner.

“I had some friends in the Kalinago people watching the building,” he said.

“A wise move, Ed. You’re nowhere near the event. It sounds like you have a party tomorrow.”

“Yes. Now, what happens to Jane? Does she pass on?” asked Ed.

“I think that’s up to her. Jane, are you ready to move on, or are you sticking around?” asked Conner.

“Conner, Ed, I thank you for helping me get revenge on the smugglers,” said Jane. “I don’t think it’s justice, as no one will face conviction for my murder. My body is gone, so I’m a free agent. I’d like to remain here for a while. Maybe we can help others.”

“Uh oh.”

“And of course Ed is our contact with the living. Through his CIA connection, we can call in the cavalry,” said Conner, a little too enthusiastically.

“Please remember we’re on honeymoon. I ask you to use me sparingly.”

“Understood, Ed. We’ll take our leave now.”
