Chapter 12
Ethan Blackthorn grinned.
“Get lost? You mean tumble in the sheets?”
Serena Blake was so furious she wanted to bite him.
“You scoundrel! From now on, you’re the security guard for this bar!”
“I won’t do it!” Ethan flatly refused.
Damn it. I’m rich enough to buy nations and powerful enough to shake the world. I’m one step away from being invincible, and she wants me working as a bouncer?
“Hmph. Then let’s get a divorce!” Serena said coldly.
Ethan felt like he could spit blood, but he didn’t dare lose his temper. He forced a smile instead. “Actually ... I’ve always aspired to be a security guard. Honey, thank you for giving me this opportunity!”
Seeing Ethan fuming but unable to fight back made Serena feel incredibly satisfied. That’s what you get for harassing me, you scoundrel.
“Hmph. Go report to Zack Stone!”
“Yes, ma’am!”
After leaving the bar, Ethan was about to find the security captain when his phone rang. The call was from his second master — the leader of the Oracle Society.
“Second Master, you miss me already?” Ethan asked cheerfully.
“You brat, you got married?” An ancient, ethereal voice came through the line.
Ethan wasn’t surprised. The Oracle Society was the world’s foremost intelligence organization. They knew about his every move.
“Yeah. So, what wedding gift are you planning to send me?”
“A gift? My ass! Do you not know you have a marriage agreement? Or have you forgotten what kind of constitution you have?” his second master demanded angrily.
Ethan whined, “Second Master, you think I wanted this? I was forced into it.”
“Bullshit! You’re a prodigy in both medicine and martial arts. The seven of us old geezers combined are no match for you, so how could some girl drugged with an aphrodisiac possibly threaten you? I think you just saw a pretty face and got ideas.”
“Second Master, what kind of person do you take me for? I, Ethan Blackthorn, am a man of integrity! How could I be swayed by mere beauty?”
“Hmph. Divorce her. Divorce her immediately. Otherwise, we’ll tell Luna you got married and let her deal with you.”
Ethan shivered. Luna was his senior brother’s daughter — the Human Emperor’s daughter. She wasn’t old, but she was an absolute little terror.
“Second Master, I was wrong! It’s not that I don’t want a divorce — it’s that I can’t right now.”
“What do you mean?”
“Have you forgotten about my constitution?”
On the other end of the line, the Oracle Society leader trembled. “You little rascal, don’t tell me ninety percent of your cultivation has already entered Serena Blake’s body.”
“You’re a genius, Second Master!”
“What a disaster! In that case, just come clean with her. Reveal your identity and tell her to offer herself to you. Tell her she’ll receive an astronomical sum as compensation if she’s willing.”
Ethan said gloomily, “If only it were that simple. But Second Master, I promise you — as soon as I get my cultivation back, I’ll divorce her.”
“And when will that be?”
“It should be very soon. After all, with my immense charm, what woman could resist?”
His second master chuckled. “That’s true. Well, hurry it up.”
“Understood!”
His second master hung up, and Ethan breathed a sigh of relief.
Damn it, I’d better not find out which bastard told Second Master about this. If I do, I’ll beat the crap out of him.
(The Southern King, Dominic Hale, suddenly sneezed.)
Ethan turned and entered the security office, where several guards were playing poker.
“Who is Zack Stone?” Ethan asked.
A brawny man’s gaze fell on him. This was Zack Stone, the security captain for Serena’s bar. He looked Ethan up and down with disdain before asking indifferently, “What’s up?”
“You’re Zack Stone?” Ethan inquired with a smile.
“That’s right.”
“Oh, I’m here to report for duty.”
“Report? What do you mean?” the man asked again.
Ethan chuckled. “It means that from now on, I’m a proud member of the bar’s security team. Please look after me, Captain Stone.”
Zack Stone let out a sinister laugh. “Look after you? No problem. But buddy, how can I do that when you’ve come empty-handed?”
“What do you mean, Captain Stone?” Ethan asked, feigning ignorance.
Zack grinned. “Here’s the deal. Go across the street and get me two cartons of Imperial Nines. After that, I’ll be sure to look after you.”
“No problem,” Ethan replied, holding out his hand.
“What’s this for?” Zack asked, his voice turning cold.
“You asked me to go buy cigarettes, didn’t you? Where’s the money?”
The room erupted in thunderous laughter. Everyone stared at Ethan as if he were an idiot. Zack, in particular, laughed so hard his stomach ached.
“Kid, you don’t know how things work, do you? If that’s the case, I can’t look out for you. In fact, I’m afraid our humble little security team has no room for you.”
Ethan was secretly delighted. He didn’t want to be a security guard anyway.
“Are you serious, Zack?”
“Yes, I’m serious!” Zack sneered.
Ethan smiled. “Alright, I’ll go talk to Manager Blake right now!”
At those words, a cold glint flashed in Zack’s eyes.
“Stop right there!”
Zack was furious.
What the hell.
Some stinking beggar, who knew whose connections he used, wanted to join the security team. Not paying his respects was one thing, but now he was trying to tattle.
He was truly sick of this.
“What, thinking of running to complain?” Zack asked coldly.
As his words fell, several security guards suddenly surrounded Ethan, all of them glaring at him with hostility.
Ethan looked at Zack, utterly baffled.
Complain? Where did that come from?
“Captain Stone, you must be mistaken. I wasn’t thinking of complaining at all,” Ethan said.
He had been looking for Serena to tell her that he wasn’t cut out to be a security guard, hoping she would drop the idea. Although Zack demanding a “gift” had annoyed him, Ethan understood that the security team had its own rules, and he had no intention of disrupting them. How had that turned into him wanting to complain?
“Hmph, you think I’m as brain-dead as you? If you weren’t going to complain, why were you looking for President Blake?”
“I was looking for my wife to tell her I’m not suited for this job,” Ethan explained.
Zack sneered. “Kid, don’t tell me President Blake is your wife.”
Ethan nodded. “That’s right. Serena Blake really is my wife!”
The moment he said it, a roar of thunderous laughter erupted in the large security room. The men were doubled over, some clutching their stomachs. Zack laughed so hard that tears streamed from his eyes.
“President Blake is a swan, no doubt, but you’re not even a maggot! And you want to marry her?” Zack sneered viciously. “Kid, if you’re President Blake’s husband, I’ll call you Dad!”
Ethan was amused. It was rare to see someone so eager to call another man his father.
“I don’t have a worthless son like you,” Ethan said with a faint smile.
Zack instantly roared, “F•©k, are you looking to die?”
“Heh, it’s been a while since I’ve heard someone brag so ... originally,” Ethan said, looking at Zack with disdain.
“F•©k, it seems you’re determined to do this the hard way! Kid, let me tell you, either you obediently go buy me two cartons of cigarettes, and I’ll pretend today never happened, or you can’t blame me for being ruthless. And I’m not afraid to tell you, the bar’s deputy manager, Damon Stone, is my own uncle!”
Ethan was instantly irritated. No wonder this piece of trash dared to act so domineeringly in the security team. He had powerful backing. What angered Ethan even more was that, after being mocked as a maggot and having clearly refused, the man still had the audacity to keep pressuring him to buy cigarettes.
Does he really think I’m a pushover he can squeeze however he wishes?
“I’ll give you one chance to rephrase that. Say it again,” Ethan said coldly.
As soon as he finished speaking, a lackey jumped forward.
“F•©k, you’re tired of living, aren’t you? How dare you speak to Captain Stone like that!”
“Exactly! You’re just a damn beggar, and you dare to act tough with our Captain? You really don’t know how to write the word ‘death’!”
“Captain Stone, just say the word and we’ll take care of him. Beating trash like this is just a waste of energy.”
As the men chimed in, Ethan understood completely. This security team was Zack Stone’s personal domain.
Zack stared at Ethan with a sinister expression. He leisurely lit a cigarette, and as he exhaled a plume of smoke, he suddenly barked, “Get on your knees for me!”
Ethan thought he had misheard. “What did you say?”
“F•©k, are you deaf? Didn’t you hear Captain Stone tell you to kneel?” a lackey bellowed, swinging a hand fiercely at Ethan’s head.
Ethan slapped him backhanded, a single, sharp blow that sent the man collapsing to the floor, out cold.
Everyone present was stunned.
Zack, however, became enraged. He flicked the lit cigarette butt at Ethan and shouted, “Get him!”
The remaining guards charged at Ethan without a second thought.
Ethan snorted with contempt. In a blur of motion, he was standing directly in front of Zack.
Zack’s heart lurched. Just as he was about to move, Ethan’s lightning-fast kick slammed into his stomach, forcing him to his knees.
That’s right. Ethan’s principle in life was simple: If they don’t mess with me, I won’t mess with them. But if they mess with me, I’ll f•©king end them.
Faced with Zack’s repeated provocations, Ethan had finally made his move.
Zack’s face turned pale as he struggled to breathe. The pain in his gut was so intense he felt like he was dying. The other guards, who had been ready to attack, were now frozen in shock. Who would have believed a beggar would dare to strike Zack Stone, and so viciously at that?
Though they didn’t advance, they all watched Ethan with malicious glee, knowing he was in for it now. After all, Zack’s uncle was Damon Stone, the bar’s deputy manager. Not only was Damon a martial artist, but he was also highly regarded by Serena.
At that moment, Zack struggled to his feet, his eyes blazing with rage. “Kid, if you have any guts, you won’t go anywhere!”
Ethan sneered. He had no intention of leaving anyway. “Oh, calling for backup? Go on, hurry up. If I can’t handle you today, I’ll take your last name!”
“F•©k you! Just you wait!” Zack shouted, pulling out his phone to make a call.
Ethan scoffed disdainfully. He knew the trash was calling his so-called uncle, but frankly, he wasn’t the least bit afraid. A mere deputy manager thought he could do whatever he wanted? Who gave him the authority?
The call connected quickly.
“Uncle, some piece of trash beat me up,” Zack said, his voice full of feigned misery. After a brief pause, he added, “I’m in the security office!”
Hanging up, Zack snarled, “Trash, you’re dead now!”
Ethan slapped him again, hard.
Zack cried out in pain. He endured the searing sting, his eyes narrowed as he glared at Ethan, looking as if he wanted to tear him apart. But he held back. His uncle would be here any minute, and then this lowlife would surely pay.
Just then, the door to the security office was pushed open. A man in his forties with a stoic expression walked in. He had an ordinary face but a burly, imposing frame, like an iron tower. His presence alone was oppressive. This had to be Zack’s uncle, Damon Stone.
The moment Zack saw him, he acted as if he’d suffered the world’s greatest injustice. He pointed at Ethan, sobbing, “Uncle, that’s the trash who hit me!”
Damon Stone’s gaze fell on Ethan, cold and detached. “Why did you hit him?”
“Simple,” Ethan explained patiently. “I came to start my new job, and he demanded I buy him two cartons of cigarettes as tribute. I refused, so he ordered his men to beat me.” This man was, after all, the deputy manager of Serena’s bar and likely held in high esteem by her, so Ethan decided to give him some face.
“You’re full of shit! Uncle, don’t listen to his nonsense! He was insulting President Blake, and I couldn’t stand it, so I taught him a lesson!” Zack retorted.
Ethan couldn’t help but laugh. This piece of trash was quite skilled at twisting the truth. He started to regret holding back earlier.
“That’s right, Manager Stone! This guy was insulting President Blake. Our Captain couldn’t stand it and tried to reason with him, but the guy just hit him!”
“Yes, Manager Stone, I can prove it! He was insulting President Blake, so Captain Stone stood up to defend her honor. They argued, and then this guy attacked our Captain.”
Damon Stone’s brow furrowed slightly. “How did he insult President Blake?”
Zack quickly piped up, “This trash claimed to be President Blake’s husband! He even said she was incredibly lucky to be able to marry him.”
Damon Stone’s heart skipped a beat. His gaze fell on Ethan again, and he began to reassess the young man.
Ethan simply watched him with a calm smile.
“Apologize,” Damon Stone suddenly said in a cold voice.
Zack broke into a triumphant, vicious smirk. He knew his uncle would back him up. The other guards also watched Ethan with delight, anticipating his downfall.
“Uncle, this trash beat me so badly I’m aching all over. I think I’ll need to go to the hospital for a check-up. An apology isn’t enough! He needs to pay for my medical bills and get on his knees to apologize to me!”
“Shut up,” Damon Stone roared, his voice sharp. “I was telling you to apologize!”
BOOM!!!
Everyone, including Zack Stone, was instantly shocked. They stared at Damon Stone, utterly dumbfounded. In their wildest dreams, they could not believe that Damon Stone had actually told Zack to apologize to this piece of trash.
Ethan was amused. He had thought Damon was going to stand up for these scumbags, but unexpectedly, the man was demanding they apologize to him instead. Of course, Ethan knew this wasn’t out of a sense of justice. It was because Damon Stone was almost certain he was Serena’s husband. After all, he operated on a level far higher than trash like Zack. It was perfectly reasonable that these lowlifes didn’t know Serena had married him.
Ethan’s guess was correct. Damon Stone had indeed heard the news that Serena Blake married a beggar. From Ethan’s clothes and appearance, he had already deduced that he was the one.
Coming to his senses, Zack was instantly furious. “Uncle, he’s the one who hit me! Why should I have to apologize to him?”
SLAP!!!
Damon Stone swung a vicious backhand slap across Zack’s head. The force of the blow sent Zack stumbling to the ground, where he landed in an embarrassing face-plant.
