Chapter 17

As soon as the words were spoken, Ethan Blackthorn walked in with Mia Sterling.

When Marcus Blake saw Ethan appear before him, safe and sound, the color instantly drained from his face. He never dreamed that Ethan would be released so quickly, and he certainly hadn’t anticipated Mia’s presence. Marcus panicked. He realized he couldn’t stay a moment longer. If he did, he would undoubtedly be the one to face humiliation. After all, Mia would surely reveal that he had eaten two pounds of feces.

With this thought, Marcus bolted for the door as if fleeing for his life.

“Brother-in-law, running so fast? Got a craving for more shit?” Ethan asked with a cold laugh.

Stung by this remark, Marcus stumbled and fell heavily to the ground. Richard Blake hurriedly got up and left the villa.

This sudden turn of events left both Serena and her mother stunned.

Then again, Mia did stand up for me last night, Serena thought. It’s only natural for Marcus to be terrified of her. But what I don’t get is ... didn’t he claim that he was the one who had Mia take Ethan away? If that’s the case, why did she bring him back? Could it be that Marcus was lying? Ethan being taken by the police had nothing to do with Mia at all? And she was actually the one who rescued him? That has to be it. Otherwise, why would Marcus run the second he saw her?

In any case, it wasn’t important anymore. What mattered was that Ethan was safe. An inexplicable joy blossomed in Serena’s heart, though even she didn’t know why.

“Miss Sterling, thank you for rescuing my husband!” Serena said gratefully. Although seeing Ethan and Mia together made her a little uncomfortable, she knew how to keep things separate and wasn’t the type to get them muddled.

Mia smiled seductively. “And how do you plan to thank me?”

Serena’s heart sank. She knew Mia was about to bring up the divorce again. Just as she was about to speak, Ethan declared righteously, “Miss Sterling, I will never divorce my wife, so you can give up that notion!”

Hearing those words, Serena felt a surge of gratitude.

Mia looked at Ethan with a heartbroken expression, and crystal-clear tears welled up in her watery, beguiling eyes. “Serena, I will not give up.”

After leaving that final sentence hanging in the air, she covered her face and ran outside.

A weight settled in Serena’s heart. Honestly, I have no idea what the most prominent young lady of Silverton City sees in Ethan. Could it be that Mia has seen so many handsome men and beautiful women that she’s grown tired of them? Is she just looking for a change of pace? I don’t know whether to criticize her poor taste or call this shameless scoundrel lucky.

“Honey, what did Marcus want?” Ethan asked curiously.

“Hmph, what do you think? He claimed you offended him and had Mia get you thrown in jail. Then he tried to use that as leverage, forcing me to trade the bar for your release,” Serena said irritably.

Ethan chuckled.

Serena, however, assumed he was mocking her, and her stunningly beautiful face instantly frosted over. “Jerk! After I’ve been bullied like this, you still have the nerve to laugh?”

Ethan smiled. “Honey, don’t get me wrong. I’m not laughing at you. I’m laughing at that piece of trash, Marcus. A guy who does nothing but eat shit actually had the gall to come and bother you!”

Serena knew nothing about Marcus’s shit-eating incident and thought Ethan was just being vulgar. Her expression darkened as she said, “Could you please be a little more civilized?”

“Alright,” Ethan said softly. “What I mean is, I’m sorry you were put through that today. But I promise, something like this will never happen again.”

A wave of warmth spread through Serena. Honestly, his words did touch her. But then again, this guy is just a beggar. Marcus is the eldest young master of the Blake family. The difference in their status is like the heavens and the earth. Where did this shameless scoundrel get the confidence to say something like that? Obviously, he’s just bragging again.

At this thought, displeasure was written all over her face. “Hmph! Stop making such empty boasts in the future. I hate it!”

Seeing that she didn’t believe him, Ethan couldn’t be bothered to explain. The facts would speak for themselves soon enough.

“Ethan, didn’t you go to buy a villa? Tell me, where is this villa you purchased?” Serena’s mother suddenly asked. It seemed Ethan’s previous statement had displeased her as well.

“I did buy one!” Ethan said with a smile.

The expressions on both Serena and her mother’s faces darkened. This guy was bragging again. Serena was so angry she wanted to bite him. Why can’t he ever drop this terrible habit of bragging?

“Is that so? Then may I ask, where is the property deed?” her mother asked sternly.

Ethan smiled and explained, “Oh, the deed is still being processed. I’m sure it will be in my hands soon.”

Serena let out a cold laugh. I knew it. All that bragging, and nothing to show for it. And he still insists he bought a villa. What an awkward boast. Does he really not know the meaning of embarrassment?

“So, you’re saying you can’t produce a single thing, yet you dare claim you’ve bought a villa?” her mother asked coldly.

Ethan said, “I have the key!”

Serena and her mother were both startled. They exchanged a look. Could it be that this guy really bought a villa?

“Where is the key?” her mother demanded gravely.

Ethan took it out.

Instantly, anger contorted Serena’s beautiful features, while her mother’s eyes filled with disappointment. Staring at the archaic-looking key in Ethan’s hand, Serena asked with an icy chill in her voice, “This is the key to the Dragon’s Crest Estates?”

“That’s right! I bought the premier unit, the King Villa, at Dragon’s Crest Estates. It’s an antique-style courtyard home, so it uses this kind of key!”

To be honest, Ethan had his own doubts when he first received the key. In this day and age, who still used this kind of key to open a door? Later, when Mia was driving him back, he had specifically asked her about it. Mia had just laughed and retorted, “Shouldn’t an antique-style building come with an antique-style key?” After hearing her explanation, Ethan thought it made a certain kind of sense.

“Do you take me for a fool?” Serena questioned, her voice frigid.

The premier unit, no less. His boasts are going to tear a hole in the sky! Serena knew perfectly well that the King Villa at Dragon’s Crest Estates was worth one billion dollars. Not even the six top-tier families of Silverton City would necessarily be willing to spend that kind of money. Yet this shameless scoundrel had the audacity to spew such nonsense.

Disappointment, deeper than any she had ever felt, washed over Serena as she looked at him.
